I accepted the position as General Manager on April 1st, 1985. Over the years I have seen so
many changes. The list would be too long to mention it all, but I
will say, that with each passing year, the facility gets better and
better. So many different programs have been expanded and we continuously
strive to make the quality of our service and staff our number one
goal.
For those who do not know about the Club's beginning, I would
like to give you a little history.
Genesis
In the beginning ... in late Fall of 1947, after many weeks of informal discussions, four men met to discuss the founding of the Weston Field Club. Once the decision was made to go ahead, each of these men signed a Founding Bond of $25,000.
Next step was to sign up 25 other families as charter members.
They backed up their faith in the idea by signing a pledge to remain
members for at least three years. Once this nucleus was obtained,
a drive for forty additional members began. Thus, on a beautiful
summer day in July, 1948, the Weston Field Club was officially opened.
The original Weston Field Club used to be a private school. A ten year lease with option to purchase was drawn up. The option was exercised in 1958 - what a wise investment it was!
Exodus:
Now there was a Weston Field Club - on paper! The Ark was just a tired old barn, blissfully free of all oddments such as windows, plumbing, or a tight roof. The two tennis courts hid their heads in grassy shame whenever a tennis racquet approached.
But the members pitched in with what since has become and been accepted as WFC enthusiasm. Most of the work was done by hands more accustomed to Madison Avenue martinis than mauls and mallets.
The Club progressed steadily: additional courts constructed, the Ark improved, the lake cleared and much more done as time went by.
Leviticus:
Presently, the Club is prospering, the membership limit has been reached and there is a comfortable waiting list.
But it is good, while enjoying today's Weston Field Club, to recall its humble
beginnings and remember, that we want to stay "rural",
small and intimate: A club for healthy enjoyment by all members
of our families.
I believe, it is important to remind ourselves, this is a member-owned
club and truly a club run by its members. We depend on our members
to volunteer to join committees, run tennis tournaments, become
timers and scorers at swim meets and help with several other activities.
The Club has become very successful and we owe a great deal of
that success to past and present Board of Governors and the Club
Officers.
Each new president carries on the vision of many
past presidents, promoting the club's continual growth, ensuring
that the Weston Field Club remains an all family club - a club for
all seasons.
It is my hope, that all members, present and future, enjoy the Weston Field Club as much as I have enjoyed working here. My grand kids have always been welcome at the club and have fond memories of the activities they enjoyed and all the fun they had.
When you become part of the Field Club, you gain an extended family, forming bonds that will last a life time.
